In Elisa Deval’s work, jewellery seems to begin with a line that has left the page to occupy space. It does not describe a closed form: it extends, breaks and articulates, creating structures that continually change as they are worn.
Questa idea di disegno tridimensionale è centrale nella sua ricerca. Sottili elementi metallici vengono collegati tra loro lasciando che il vuoto abbia lo stesso peso della materia. La composizione non dipende soltanto da ciò che è presente, ma anche dalle distanze, dalle aperture e dalle relazioni che si creano tra una parte e l’altra.
This idea of three-dimensional drawing is central to her practice. Thin metal elements are connected while allowing empty space to carry the same weight as material. The composition depends not only on what is present, but also on distances, openings and the relationships created between one part and another.
Il movimento introduce una seconda dimensione. Le strutture non restano mai identiche a se stesse: oscillano, si sovrappongono, cambiano orientamento. Il gioiello diventa così una forma temporanea, definita ogni volta dal gesto e dalla posizione di chi lo indossa.
Movement introduces a second dimension. The structures never remain identical to themselves: they swing, overlap and change orientation. Jewellery thus becomes a temporary form, redefined each time by the gesture and position of the wearer.
Anche la superficie partecipa a questo linguaggio. Incisioni, sovrapposizioni e lavorazioni del metallo interrompono l’uniformità e introducono variazioni che emergono lentamente, soprattutto quando la luce cambia. La precisione tecnica non viene esibita come virtuosismo, ma utilizzata per costruire ritmo.
Surface also participates in this language. Engraving, layering and metalwork interrupt uniformity and introduce variations that emerge gradually, especially as the light changes. Technical precision is not displayed as virtuosity, but used to construct rhythm.
Nel lavoro di Deval il gioiello non coincide quindi con un oggetto statico. È piuttosto una struttura aperta, capace di modificarsi nello spazio e nel tempo. Una forma che non viene semplicemente appoggiata sul corpo, ma che attraverso il corpo continua a ridisegnarsi.
In Deval’s work, jewellery therefore does not coincide with a static object. It is instead an open structure, capable of changing through space and time. A form that is not simply placed on the body, but continues to redraw itself through it.
