Claudia Cuzzeri’s practice originates in sculpture and unfolds through an ongoing dialogue with materials. Her sculptures and jewelry share the same approach: a process based on observation, craftsmanship and a deep understanding of the nature of materials. In this conversation, she reflects on gesture, materiality and the close relationship between sculpture and jewelry.

Your research originates in sculpture, which stands at the center of your practice. How does this influence your approach to jewelry?
Creare gioielli nasce come conseguenza della mia attività di scultrice: il processo creativo e la manualità sviluppate mi consentono di approcciarmi ai diversi materiali. Le due attività si arricchiscono reciprocamente.
Creating jewelry is a natural extension of my work as a sculptor. The creative process and the manual skills I have developed allow me to engage with different materials, and the two practices continuously enrich one another.
Nei tuoi lavori si percepisce un rapporto diretto e istintivo con la materia. Che ruolo ha il gesto nel tuo processo creativo?
Your work reveals a direct and instinctive relationship with materials. What role does gesture play in your creative process?
La creazione nasce dapprima attraverso l’ispirazione che visualizzo tramite l’occhio della mente. Il gesto mi permette poi di trasformare quell’immagine in realtà, mantenendo come elemento fondamentale una consapevole conoscenza dei materiali e delle loro proprietà.
Creation begins with an image visualized through the mind’s eye. Gesture then allows me to transform that vision into reality, always guided by an awareness of the materials and their properties.
Le forme irregolari e le superfici segnate sono elementi ricorrenti. Nascono da una progettazione o si sviluppano durante il fare?
Irregular forms and textured surfaces frequently appear in your work. Are they planned in advance or do they emerge during the making process?
Parte della mia espressività nasce dalla volontà di utilizzare i materiali nel loro stato naturale, lasciando che evochino il processo che li trasforma in gioiello. È un atto che unisce semplicità, raffinatezza e autenticità.
Part of my visual language comes from my desire to work with materials in their natural state, allowing them to evoke the process through which they become jewelry. It is an approach that combines simplicity, refinement and authenticity.

Jewelry, in your practice, seems to be an extension of sculpture. How does your work change when it enters into a relationship with the body?
Il gioiello nasce dalla stessa ricerca che guida il mio lavoro scultoreo, ma acquisisce una nuova dimensione quando viene indossato. Entrando in relazione con il corpo, completa il proprio significato attraverso il movimento e la presenza della persona che lo sceglie.
Jewelry originates from the same research that guides my sculptural work, yet it gains a new dimension when worn. In relation to the body, it completes its meaning through movement and the presence of the person who chooses it.

Your works maintain a strong physical and tactile presence. How important is this sensory dimension for you?
Un gioiello scultoreo significa lavorare con le mani. Le sensazioni sono essenziali nella creazione: è importante giocare, manipolare e piegare la materia con l’intento di risvegliare i cinque sensi.
A sculptural jewel means working with one’s hands. Sensations are essential to the creative process: I enjoy manipulating and shaping matter with the intention of awakening the five senses.

Between sculpture and jewelry: do you see a boundary between the two practices, or are they part of the same language?
Per me scultura e gioiello sono due espressioni dello stesso linguaggio che è la bellezza. Nell’una e nell’altro trovo un valore emotivo, sia nel crearli sia nell’apprezzarli.
For me, sculpture and jewelry are two expressions of the same language: beauty. In both, I find an emotional value, both in the act of creating and in the experience of appreciating them.
