Il termine chevalière indica tradizionalmente un anello con castone piatto, spesso inciso con uno stemma o un monogramma. Per secoli non è stato soltanto un gioiello: era un segno di identità e di autorità.

The term chevalière traditionally refers to a ring with a flat bezel, often engraved with a coat of arms or a monogram. For centuries it was more than a jewel: it was a sign of identity and authority.

Lo chevalière appartiene alla lunga tradizione degli anelli sigillo (signet rings), utilizzati già nell’antichità per autenticare documenti e lettere. Premendo il castone inciso nella ceralacca, il proprietario lasciava un’impronta che garantiva l’origine e l’autenticità del messaggio.

The chevalière belongs to the long tradition of signet rings, already used in ancient times to authenticate documents and letters. By pressing the engraved bezel into sealing wax, the owner left an imprint that guaranteed the origin and authenticity of the message.

Per questo motivo gli stemmi incisi sugli chevalière araldici venivano realizzati al contrario. Solo così, premendo il castone nella ceralacca, il sigillo risultava leggibile nella direzione corretta.

For this reason the coats of arms engraved on heraldic chevalières were carved in reverse. Only in this way, when the bezel was pressed into sealing wax, the imprint appeared in the correct direction.

Questo dettaglio tecnico rivela quanto lo chevalière fosse concepito prima di tutto come strumento di autenticazione, prima ancora che come ornamento. Il segno inciso nell’anello diventava così una vera firma materiale.

This technical detail reveals how the chevalière was originally conceived primarily as an authentication tool before becoming an ornament. The engraved mark on the ring thus became a material signature.

Nel corso dei secoli lo chevalière è diventato uno degli oggetti simbolici più importanti delle famiglie nobili europee. L’anello veniva inciso con lo stemma araldico della famiglia e tramandato di generazione in generazione.

Over the centuries the chevalière became one of the most symbolic objects among European noble families. The ring was engraved with the family coat of arms and passed down from generation to generation.

Non era soltanto un ornamento, ma un oggetto carico di significato, legato alla storia e all’identità familiare.

It was not merely an ornament, but an object charged with meaning, connected to family history and identity.

Anche il modo di indossarlo seguiva precise tradizioni. Nella cultura aristocratica europea lo chevalière veniva spesso portato al mignolo della mano sinistra o della mano destra, e questa scelta non era casuale.

The way the chevalière was worn also followed precise traditions. In European aristocratic culture the ring was often worn on the little finger of the left or right hand, and this choice was not random.

In alcune tradizioni francesi, ad esempio, lo chevalière veniva portato al mignolo sinistro dai figli primogeniti, mentre altri membri della famiglia potevano indossarlo al mignolo destro.

In some French traditions, for example, the chevalière was worn on the left little finger by the eldest son, while other family members could wear it on the right little finger.

In questo modo l’anello diventava un vero segno sociale, riconoscibile da chi conosceva il linguaggio dell’araldica.

In this way the ring became a social sign, recognizable to those familiar with the language of heraldry.

From Seal to Form

Con il passare del tempo la pratica dei sigilli in ceralacca è scomparsa, e con essa la funzione originaria dello chevalière. L’anello però non è scomparso.

Over time the practice of sealing wax signatures disappeared, and with it the original function of the chevalière. The ring itself, however, did not disappear.

Ciò che è rimasto è la forza della forma. Uno chevalière è immediatamente riconoscibile: un anello solido, un castone piatto, una superficie destinata a diventare segno.

What remains is the strength of its form. A chevalière is immediately recognizable: a solid ring, a flat bezel, a surface destined to become a mark.

Questa struttura semplice e archetipica ha attraversato i secoli senza perdere la propria identità.

This simple and archetypal structure has crossed centuries without losing its identity.
